Round 3 - Old Peninsula v Parkdale

Personnel deficit prove decisive as depleted Pirates fall to Vultures.

Author: Frank Bowen

With ten forced changes from the previous round and only six members of the Premiership side available for selection, the Pirates faced a significant challenge from the outset. The boys remained competitive throughout the opening ten minutes before the home side established their rhythm, as three successive goals from former AFL forward Mitch Brown placed the Pirates under immediate pressure. While classy late responses from Hugh Peacock and Andrew Hocheggor kept the contest within reach, a wind-affected second term ensured the afternoon would become a formidabble test of the squad's depth.

The momentum shifted heavily toward Parkdale in the second term as they utilised the breeze to boot six unanswered goals. While Luka Tonner and Kurt Thiele toiled determinedly against the tide, the Pirates were eventually forced to mitigate the scoreboard impact. By reinforcing the defensive unit with extra numbers, they managed to halt the Vultures' run, conceding just the one goal during a more disciplined final ten minutes.

Mitch Brown was a central figure for the Vultures, booting 12 goals in a dominant display. The Pirates' defenders were tireless in their attempt to quell his influence, but Brown’s efficiency in front of the big sticks ensured the home side remained firmly in control. The timing of his leads and strong hands meant that the Pirates’ defenders were constantly under the pump.

The Vultures discipline and strength as a unit shone in the third, adding eight unanswered goals to their total. Brown remained the focal point, three for the term reaching 11 majors under his own name and further stretch the Pirates' understaffed resources. While the 131-point margin at three-quarter time looked dire, the Pirates work ethic was unwavering as they continued to compete until the final siren.

Parkdale continued to make use of the conditions in the last, Kai Day adding three majors as the home side maintained their offensive pressure. The Pirates struggled to find a response to goal against disciplined defence, recording just the one behind for the quarter. A major from Mitch Brown just before the siren punctuated a dominant display from the hosts, with the final margin reflecting a difficult afternoon for the hard-fought but drained Pirates.

A major positive to emerge from the day was of Under-19s Darcy Still and Jesse Somdecerff, who both performed admirably in their first senior appearances. Nelson Forrest continued his fierce form with a stand-up individual display, leading from the front alongside skipper George Fletcher.

The outing against a strong outfit provided a powerful look at the reality of an injury ravaged side. The lack of availability in both the Seniors and Ressies made for a tricky task, reinforcing how maintaining a healthy list is a vital factor in competing at this level. Parkdale was the form side throughout 2025 before falling in straight sets in the finals. They will no doubt continue to be ruthless this season.

Encouragingly, the seniors are set to see an influx of top players return in the next couple of weeks to bolster our stocks.

The Under 19s provided the highlight of the weekend with a dominant performance at Williamstown. Leading at every change, the Unders secured a clinical 72-point win. Jack Dillon was the standout, taking BOG honours with a seven-goal haul.
