Round 7 - Old Peninsula v Fitzroy
Pirates push top-of-table Fitzroy in positive first half before hosts secure the points.
Author: Frank Bowen
Regardless of being the clear underdogs from the opening bounce, a different Pirates side looked to be out there compared to last week. The boys were hungry, fierce, and tackled relentlessly throughout the first quarter; exactly what was needed in order to have a chance against top-of-the-table Fitzroy.
While largely historic from the current players’ point of view, the rivalry between the two clubs runs deep and certain memories remain. So it was no surprise that tempers flared early with Cooper Denton being sent off, but it sparked the Pirates immediately. Two commanding goals from George Fletcher lifted the visitors, and some strong defensive efforts from Cobba, Ben Goates, and Jake Williams kept the boys within a few kicks at quarter-time.
The hosts converted the opening goal of the second term but spirits remained high. The revised game plan from kicking down the line to short 45s and direct movement started to show as the Pirates capitalised on a succession of late goals to Bails, Coops, and Jake Lovett - the pivotal inclusion who proved the difference in the middle with 26 disposals and 2 goals.
The Pirates’ attack at the footy was on display in the first half and showed in the stat line: +6 in contested possessions and +3 in defensive 50 tackles, translating on the scoreboard as 4 Pirates majors to 3 set the margin tight at just 11 points at half time.
Fitzroy asserted their authority in the third quarter, making use of their fitness to overwhelm the Pirates' defense on the back of a lopsided 22–7 inside-50 count. Conceding 11 goals in the term saw the margin blow out to 66 points, despite Disco, Felly, and Jake Williams standing tall throughout the quarter.
The scoring trend continued into the final term, where a lone goal from Cobba was the only response as Fitzroy took home a 93-point win.
Irrespective of the scoreboard, the Pirates’ first half was outstanding, giving glimpses of their ceiling and what’s to come if the boys can play a full game of footy. The upcoming King’s Birthday bye will give the squad time to gain a few more numbers before facing St Bede’s away. The Unders and Ressies were both unable to get the job done against two strong outfits.
