Round 10 - Old Peninsula v PEGS

Dunney shines as resurgent Pirates secure crucial victory ahead of Felly’s 200th.

Author: Frank Bowen

The Harry Mac hosted a huge day of Pirate footy, headlined by the Ressies breaking through with a low-scoring maiden victory of the season before the Seniors stormed home to a 27 point victory over PEGS.

Depsite a few clouds overhead throughout the afternoon, the deck remained dry, shaping a fast paced, end-to-end match. The ball ricocheted back and forth for the majority of the term, Disco and Dunney getting the Pirates on the board, but it was PEGS who took a slight lead into the first change.

The contest cracked open in the second term as the Pirates hit the ground running with devastating effect.

The PEGS defensive structure was torn to shreds in the first 10 minutes, the Pirates’ booting five unanswered goals in a patch of play that was reminiscent of the ball movement of last season.

Craig Sanders and Disco were electric through the corridor, providing silver-service delivery to Dunney up forward, who had the ball on a string.

Despite the Pirates threatening to put the game to bed late in the second term, PEGS steadied the ship, ensuring they went into the main break trailing by just a solitary goal.

The Pirates once again were hot out of the blocks, extending the buffer to 24 points just three minutes into the third. Dunney and George Fletcher both kicked truly during this initial surge, putting PEGS on the back pedal.

While the visitors managed to lock things down and claim two late steadiers before the three-quarter-time siren, the game would ultimately be decided in the opening ten minutes of the final term.

A dominant six-goal-to-three final quarter saw the Pirates comfortably run out the game, securing a crucial, possibly season-defining win that keeps our hopes of remaining in Premier C well and truly alive. Backing this up with a win against Ormond at the Harry Mac next week is now crucial, and with Felly running out for his milestone 200th match, the boys will have everything to play for.
