Round 5 - Old Peninsula v Glen Eira
Following their breakthrough win last week, the Pirates returned to their home deck intent on sustaining the winning form against 9th placed Glen Eira.
Author: Frank Bowen
The opening term was a fast-paced arm wrestle with scoring opportunities heavily restricted by both teams' intense tackling pressure. Glen Eira eventually found avenues to goal deep into the quarter, capitalising through skipper Jesse Maxfield and key forward Tim Dobson. A moment of individual brilliance from Ned Evans-Brumby got the Pirates on the board, with a remarkable long-range dribble providing a late spark.
Glen Eira re-established control immediately in the second, punishing turnovers to slot three successive goals and widen the gap to a 27-point lead. To their credit, the Pirates refused to let the game slip away, lifting their work rate in the centre and generating cleaner run out of the backline, even as the Gryphons back six held firm. The persistence was rewarded late in the half when Brendan Dunne held a strong mark on the boundary and converted from long-range, shifting the momentum slightly back in the Pirates' favour at half time.
Skipper George Fletcher urged the boys to play a Pirates brand of footy at the half-time huddle, with the belief that the team harder at the ball would get rewarded on the scoreboard.
The first major of the third via Bailey Payze ignited the Pirates, with the midfielder hitting the scoreboard and finding plenty of the footy to register 37 disposals and 2 goals alongside Hugh Peacock, Jake Williams, and Kurt Thiele, who all notched 100+ ranking points .
The Pirates continued to stay within striking distance throughout the third thanks to a goal from Tom Feldgen, but a one-way last term would still be required in order to bridge the 21-point lead at three-quarter time.
Unfortunately, the final term became a rough scrap with both teams unable to locate the big sticks, finding just one goal each at the 25-minute mark before Glen Eira slammed the nail in the coffin; the Pirates going down by 27 points at the final siren. A win next week against an in-form Fitzroy is a must.
In other news, the Ressies played out a thriller at Dallas Brooks, falling short by four points with a chance to win it after the siren. A huge rap for them despite the loss as they battle with an incomplete squad. The Under-19s take on Beaumaris at Moorabbin coming off the bye next week.
