Heartbreak at PEGS as Pirates fall short in season-defining clash.

The match opened with immediate pressure as PEGS launched a monster barrel straight from the centre square inside the opening 30 seconds. Crucial to that second-quarter turnaround, Disco and Kurt were instrumental at every stoppage, while the back 6 six repeatedly repelled PEGS' counter-attacks, giving the mids elite first-use out of the defensive 50.

The Pirates picked up right where they left off after halftime, looking structured and composed. Bails continued his brilliant day out in front of goal, snaring two early majors to stretch the Pirates' lead to a game-high 14 points midway through the third term. Just as the Pirates threatened to run away with the game, PEGS clicked into gear. Three unanswered goals in the final five minutes of the quarter—capped off by a devastating strike right on the siren—handed PEGS a 7.10 (52) to 6.10 (46) lead heading into the last.

With everything on the line, Dunney urged the boys to keep their cool and play a controlled brand of footy during an intense three-quarter-time address.

Another major through George Fletcher at the 22-minute mark gave the boys a glimmer of hope, but two late misses saw the Pirates unable to bridge the gap, going down 11.12 (78) to 8.12 (60).
